About this photo:

Grand Teton National Park: Cathedral by Eric Glassco:

This photo is a celebration of the sheer magnitude of these mountains. For scale, the picture was taken from atop Hurricane Pass at an elevation of about 10550 feet above sea level. The base of the valley in the photo lies about a thousand feet below, while the summits rise over three thousand feet above, to over 13700 feet above sea level. The scope of such huge vertical relief is difficult to convey in one tiny frame, but the early morning light, streaming in from the upper right, puts into relief the necessary components of this composition. Black and white takes out all the distractions and focuses all attention on the rock and its textures, emphasizing its imposing grandeur. The shadows cast on every facet of the huge stone terraces, themselves hundreds of feet high in their own right, provide the depth and perspective necessary to convey the awe and reverence I felt when viewing this holy place.
